If you miss the days when hip hop was fun instead of furious, then Sense of Humor Not Included is sure to please. L-Toka is a left-field rapper delivering punch lines meant to tickle funny bones rather than crush egos. The opening track “Craaaaaazay!” proves this with the line: “Put the poor ‘ting in a straight jacket/ if you like chicks with Tom Selleck mustaches.” As his name suggests, L-Toka’s lyrics sometimes revolve around familiar hip hop themes, but he seems to have unique insights. Many emcees rhyme about strippers, but “Stripper Song” focuses on the dirty aspects of such an occupation, including the smell: “Sorry Parliament, but you have nothing on this funk.” In between all of these laughs, L-Toka’s serious side slips through in small doses. One of the standout tracks, the bravely titled “Any Nigger Won’t Do,” fiercely faces the issue of racism. As far as I can tell, all 19 tracks of this album contain original music with no samples. The production is professional and the beats hit nicely; the sound is a little retro but the perfect compliment to L-Toka’s tone and delivery. Sense of Humor Not Included may not be for those who fall in the category of its title, but it is a refreshing change of pace for any hip hop fan with an open mind and a strong stomach.
