Believe it or not, 2015 is almost over. It is that time of year again when I look back and reflect on the last 365 days of my life. I think I can honestly say (for the first time probably ever), “This year was awesome!” I truly feel that 2015 was nothing but good to me in all ways: personally, academically, and professionally. Did everything go 100% perfectly? Of course not. But I am closer to all of my goals, in a good place mentally, and free of all toxic people in my life and company. That is the definition of “winning” to me.

I know some people thought I was putting Sykophunk Productions on the back burner since I returned to school, but all that noise was laid to rest this past year. We dropped 5 releases in 2015: 3 instrumental collections (Abandoned, Emotional Moods, and Cinematic Moods), Third Eye Open by joe DOE & of course the long overdue mixtape EP from Project D.O.T.A. entitled The End is Near as well as a single called “The Devil Within.” Finally got some Sykophunk shirts made! We did very few shows this year, but on Halloween we came out to rock the stage at Carnevil, and then we slipped back into the shadows. This case study file on joe DOE surfaced recently. Oh yeah, and I worked on a couple tracks for an upcoming film.

All of that, and I got almost straight As in school (I got one B – damn you Math, my Achilles Heel!). And kept my relationship with my awesome and supportive girlfriend 🙂

It is not easy to dig your way out of the ditch you were thrown in, and it is often even more difficult to keep your personal demons in check. I am living proof, however, that it can be done. My plan is to keep on moving forward and continue using my creative outlets to make art that can entertain and sometimes enlighten others. What is in store next for Sykophunk Productions? Check back next week when I post about our plans for next year…

JVB a.k.a. etc.

OK, so what can I say? Running your own label & publishing company + being part of several projects and having a day job half of the time – it all gets hectic. Sometimes you take a step back and realize oops, I haven’t updated my blog in months. But now, we’re back (again)! Here’s what’s what:

Our most recent release is the newest in the Mood series. Sort of the opposite of Dark Moods, which we released in 2012. This one is Emotional Moods. Fifteen mellow and mood-altering pieces of music flow through time and float through space, pulling the strings of the heart and pushing the limits of the soul. Through a unique mix of organic and electronic elements, VanBuren takes the listener through a variety of emotions and moods. At once thought-provoking, mystical and sensual, this collection of music stimulates the senses through repeat listens that weave in and out of new age, ambient and chillout soundscapes. Check out the News page on for the growing list of places online that you can listen to and/or download this album.

Our other recent releases from Dostah Shilailee & BL8 are available on our Bandcamp page. Plus all our older stuff as well. Dive in and enjoy…

So what are we working on next? A joe DOE video mixtape, a solo release from Misfit of Triple Vision, and the Democalypse prequel Happocrisy, for starters. Also, we’re going to let Dostah Shilailee take over the artist2artist interview series and unleash him upon our friends and foes alike. Oh yeah, and Triple Vision will be opening up for some established underground acts and performing live on Outlandish Reality for their first television appearance ever! Keep your third eye open & stay tuned to the rEvolution Underground.

rEvolutionary rap with that hardcore swag…

The new mixtape/album from Triple Vision, Mic Checkmate, is now available online for stream or download! Check out Sykophunk Productions’ newest collection of epic awesomeness – preview every song in its entirety. Buy Now and receive three exclusive bonus tracks! Keep your third eye open for more videos of live shows supporting the release.

True, I haven’t posted on this blog in quite some time. But rest assured, Sykophunk Productions has not slowed down a bit. We’re preparing to relocate back to the midwest, to reunite the Triple Vision team and throw some all new flavor at the world. So I’ve been doing my best to wrap up all current projects & unleash them upon the world.

Recently, Sykophunk Productions dropped two digital mixtapes: You and Your Friends are Dead. Game Over by joe DOE, and the collab collection VERSEatility from Jahg and joe DOE. We released both of these on Bandcamp as a “set your own price” model. You know the deal: donations always appreciated but not required. The most important thing is that if you like what you hear, share it with your friends and enemies & bump it for the rEvolution Underground.  Another project I’m currently working on is Abandoned Revisited. I had to take one more trip to the asylum before leaving the Hudson Valley for a while, so new videos for the Abandoned series are inevitably being produced.

So, what’s on the horizon for Sykophunk? The next release will probably be the joe DOE & GrimWitcH collab album, followed shortly by a new Triple Vision album/mixtape. Hopefully some more collabs with Christel South as well. And somewhere in there, I’ll find the time to finish and release Happocrisy, the prequel to Democalypse. As the fire of summer burns off, melting into the inspirational smoke of autumn, keep your Third Eye open for more epic awesomeness in the near future…

Update 12-11: The complete 9-song EP was finally released for free download on joe DOE’s Bandcamp page. Also, check out the “lyrics” video for I’m Sorry.

The latest from joe DOE marks a transitional period for Sykophunk Productions, resulting in freebies for fans. The 6-song EP Tripolar consists of all the genre-bending artcore and epic awesomeness DOE is known for, with hard-hitting & heartfelt hip hop mixing with dark soundscapes and morbid content, just as the warmth of summer starts to make room for the witching season. Available for free download, the tracks are being released weekly on Facebook. A new song will be posted on joe DOE’s Facebook page every Friday for six weeks. The first track, “I’m Sorry,” was posted on September 2, 2011.

Canibus has been in the hip hop game for a long time. The fact that he still presses on, despite his disputes with labels and the industry in general, is a testament to the underground and indie spirit. As an artist that embraces the art over the bullshit, I agree with his recent sentiments:

“In my book, sales have never quantified the talent, skill, or the artistry it takes to move someone through lyrics intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. I say this because I recognize and appreciate all of the people that have reached out to me over the years to express their gratitude for the impact my music has had on them, musically and personally. This satisfies me and makes me proud because these side effects of writing, rhyming, recording and having my music spread so far and wide is no small achievement. It’s because of you that I haven’t quit making music.”

Canibus’ new album Lyrical Law drops in a few days. Support real indie music and pre-order it today, featuring production work from Vherbal (who also provided a couple beats on my latest release, Mostly Recycled).

With all the crazy shit that’s been going on lately, I almost thought I wouldn’t see this day, but it’s here… the “official” version of Mostly Recycled is available and starting to infect the internet! *wipes sweat from brow* After dividing the album into two volumes for the advance copies (that’s right, it pays to be a true fan of sykophunk), the retail version of this insanely epic album is finally getting some distribution. So if you haven’t heard it yet, check out the full previews on Bandcamp and prepare for an eargasm: You can also download the MP3s there or on CD Baby: Of course, it’s also available on CD from the Sykophunk Store. Mad love to everyone who kept asking for it and bumped the advance releases. Now we gotta let the rest of the world know!
* Update 6-27-11: Now live on
* Update 7-2-11: Now available on iTunes and Amazon.
